Dental Sealants
Easy Cavity Protection for Kids and Adults
Molars can be tricky to keep clean, especially for younger kids who aren’t perfect at brushing their teeth. These teeth are unique because they have a broad top surface with lots of crevices. This structure allows us to chew a wide variety of nutritious foods effectively. It also makes molars more prone to decay, as food debris easily gets stuck in those crevices. If we don’t do a great job of cleaning that debris out when brushing and flossing, cavities appear. Dental sealants are a preventive treatment that protects permanent molars in children and adults.
Why Dental Sealants
We get our first permanent molars at around age six, and these teeth need to last a lifetime. By putting sealants on molars when they first erupt, we can increase the chances they will stay healthy throughout childhood, into adolescence, and adulthood. Of course, that is not the only time we can put sealants on teeth. While we highly encourage sealants as soon as the first molars appear, we also recommend them for older children and adults if we’re worried about potential decay.
