When Is IV Sedation Helpful for Dental Treatment?
For some people, getting comfortable in the dental chair takes a little reassurance. For others, even thinking about dental treatment can bring on significant anxiety, and sometimes, the concern is not fear at all. You may simply have a lengthy or complex procedure ahead and wonder how you will comfortably get through it.
This is where IV sedation can make a meaningful difference. IV sedation is the deepest level of sedation we provide at Conover Family Dental. It allows you to remain deeply relaxed while we complete the dental care you need. But when is IV sedation helpful, and how do you know whether it makes sense for you?
When Dental Anxiety Is More Than a Few Nerves
Feeling a little nervous before a dental appointment is common. If your anxiety is mild, you may find that reassurance, comfort measures, or a lighter form of sedation is all you need. Significant dental anxiety can be different.
Perhaps a difficult experience in the past has made it hard to feel comfortable receiving care. You may become extremely anxious at the thought of a procedure, or your fear may have caused you to postpone treatment you know you need. IV sedation can provide a deeper level of relaxation for patients who need more help feeling at ease.
When Treatment Is Complex or Takes More Time
You don’t necessarily have to be afraid of the dentist to benefit from IV sedation. Some procedures simply require more time in the dental chair. IV sedation can be especially helpful during lengthy or complex treatment because the medication is delivered directly through an intravenous line and can continue to be administered throughout the appointment.
While you are sedated, we still use local anesthesia to numb the areas being treated. Most patients become sleepy during IV sedation and remember very little about the procedure afterward. For someone facing more involved care, that can make the experience feel much more manageable.
When You Have Been Putting Off Needed Care
Dental anxiety can create a frustrating cycle that’s hard to break. You know something needs attention, but anxiety makes you postpone the appointment. Meanwhile, the dental problem may continue to progress. By the time you finally seek treatment, you may need more care than you would have needed earlier.
If fear has been keeping you away from the dentist, we want you to know that you do not have to simply push through it. Talking about sedation before treatment gives us an opportunity to understand what makes dental care difficult for you and determine what level of support may be appropriate.
Why IV Sedation Is Different from Other Options
IV sedation is only one way we can help patients relax. We also offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Nitrous oxide provides a lighter level of relaxation and wears off quickly. Oral conscious sedation uses prescribed medication and provides a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide alone.
IV sedation gives us another option when a deeper level of sedation is appropriate. Because the medication is administered through an IV, it can be delivered throughout your appointment to help you remain calm and comfortable. The right choice depends on you, your health history, the treatment being performed, and the level of anxiety or discomfort you anticipate.
Planning Ahead Is Important
If IV sedation is part of your treatment plan, there are a few practical details to consider. You will need someone you trust to drive you to and from your appointment. The effects of sedation can remain for several hours, so you should not plan to drive, work, or return to your normal activities immediately afterward. It is also a good idea to have someone stay with you while the effects completely wear off. We will give you specific instructions so you know how to prepare and what to expect.
Comfort Can Be Part of Your Treatment Plan
Needing help relaxing during dental treatment is nothing to be embarrassed about. We would much rather know what you are feeling so we can find a way to make your care more comfortable.
At Conover Family Dental, Dr. Jon Conover has advanced training in sedation dentistry and is certified by the Ohio State Dental Board to provide sedation dentistry. Our office also uses advanced monitoring equipment throughout treatment with sedation.
Most importantly, the decision to use IV sedation is individualized. We will review your medical history, discuss your treatment, and talk with you about your concerns before determining whether IV sedation or another option is appropriate.
